Senator Ed Durr said new gun restrictions signed into law today by Governor Phil Murphy are empty solutions that will not protect New Jerseyans from violent crime.

“Not a single one of the new restrictions that Governor Murphy is imposing on law-abiding gun owners today will do anything to protect New Jerseyans from tragic attacks like those in Highland Park, Uvalde, and Buffalo,” said Durr (R-3). “These are empty solutions that will not stop violent criminals who will ignore every new gun law that’s enacted. All these bills will do is put more legal gun owners at risk of being prosecuted for unintentional technical violations of the law.”

“I’m very disappointed that Democrats are increasing state spending by 9% when we have a looming recession and sky-high inflation that’s making it hard for families to get by,” said Durr (R-3). “Instead of giving back billions in tax overcollections to the people as Republicans proposed, we’re now learning about the billions in pork projects that Democrats jammed into their bloated $50 billion budget. There’s no way I can support that.”

“Today is a wonderful day for the pro-life community and our efforts to save as many lives as possible,” said Durr (R-3). “Unfortunately, Governor Murphy supports allowing abortions up until birth, so we still have much work to do to address this sickening taking of innocent lives here in New Jersey.”

Says His Legislation Would Eliminate Justifiable Need Requirement that Was Found Unconstitutional

Following a ruling by the United States Supreme Court today that struck down New York’s restrictive concealed carry law, Senator Ed Durr called for the passage of his bill to allow the safe concealed carry of guns in New Jersey in a manner that passes constitutional muster.

“New Jersey’s extremely restrictive concealed carry law is clearly unconstitutional for the same reason that New York’s law was just struck down by the Supreme Court,” said Durr (R-3). “I have proposed eliminating the justifiable need requirement from our concealed carry law that the United States Supreme Court said violates the Second Amendment. Further, I have proposed requiring comprehensive training to ensure that those who would carry in public are well versed in the safe handling, use, and care of their firearms.”

Included below are Senator Durr’s remarks as prepared for delivery:

Governor Murphy is responding to a tragic event in Texas with a package of gun bills here in New Jersey that would do absolutely nothing to stop school shootings. I think increasing school security is something we all agree we should do. So why aren’t we doing that?

Governor Murphy doesn’t want to talk about the fact that he cut $375 million that the Legislature approved for school security projects.

“Composting has significant economic benefits for those in the agricultural industry,” said Durr (R-3). “Farmers who use compost actually spend far less money on expensive fertilizers and pesticides, water, and irrigation. That savings can then be reinvested in the local economy or used to make improvements on the farm. My legislation will not only recognize the importance of composting, but will further encourage the practice by businesses and individuals.”

Durr: NJ Democrats Block Relief for High Gas Prices While NY Moves Forward to Help Drivers

Please Share:

Just days after New Jersey Democrats broke the rules of the Senate to block an effort by Senator Ed Durr to provide Garden State families with $500 rebates to offset high gas prices and inflation, New York announced a gas tax holiday to provide relief to drivers. Similar relief has been enacted in nearby states, including Connecticut and Maryland.

“New Jersey Democrats appear to be the only people who don’t care that middle-class families are struggling with record-high gas prices and inflation,” said Durr (R-3). “That’s the only reason that would explain why they blocked our effort last week to put $500 back in the pockets of millions of New Jersey families immediately.”

Durr: Democrats Violate Senate Rules to Prevent Vote on $500 “Give It Back” Tax Rebate to New Jersey Families

During a session of the New Jersey Senate today, Democrats violated the rules of the Senate to improperly block a vote on legislation that would provide an immediate $500 rebate to most New Jersey families.

During today's Senate session, I made a motion to call a vote on my "Give It Back" bill that would provide New Jersey families with immediate $500 rebates to offset the impact of soaring gas prices and inflation.

Democrats actually broke the rules of the Senate to block a vote on this tax relief. Absolutely unbelievable.

Posted by Senator Edward Durr on Thursday, May 26, 2022

“It’s unbelievable that Democrats would violate the rules of the Senate to prevent New Jersey families from getting a $500 rebate to help offset the impact of soaring gas prices and inflation,” said Senator Ed Durr (R-3). “They just demonstrated clearly that they’d rather divvy up billions of dollars of tax overcollections in a back room for pet projects than help struggling families. Why are Democrats so afraid of giving real tax relief to New Jerseyans?”

“A child that loses a parent or guardian to a drunk driver experiences an incredible amount of emotional distress. Their entire life is upended in an instant and, in addition to emotional consequences, they may also suffer significant financial consequences,” said Durr (R-3). “Since parents are ultimately responsible for the upbringing and education of their children, if a parent is killed by a drunk driver, that driver should be held responsible for the financial well-being of those children.”

“With some of the most rigid gun laws in the nation, New Jersey aggressively prevents innocent residents from protecting themselves, but fails miserably when it comes to controlling illegal arms and locking up predators who commit crimes with firearms,” said Durr (R-3). “These bills will help save the lives, families and constitutional rights of New Jerseyans who have been forsaken by Trenton bureaucrats committed to releasing convicts and weakening the criminal justice system.”
